I had it bad in High School. Went with a bad crowd, did otherwise vile things. And because of my actions, almost didn’t graduate. It was a good thing a special school somewhere down in Alabang, mainly Anima Christi, took me under their wing. I sure did learn a lot – it was a major revelation for me.

What was great during my stay there, that I was their first High School graduate. And I did it with flying colors. It was one of the most proudest times of my life, that I actually felt I’ve accomplished something important (which of course, was really important! I wouldn’t be able to go to College without a High School diploma).

Perhaps what made survive my ideal was Anima Christi’s ideals. It was a simple school, with some of the worst students – majority of my classmates were either drug rehab students, or students with very bad school records – but everyone was treated as a member of a loving family. Sure, we may not have the brightest of students, or that we’re constantly bullied by bigger schools – didn’t matter, most schools run in fear when they found out who we really were – but everyone made sure to persevere and make the most out of life.
So it was refreshing when I decided to visit them last month. The school has grown, holding more teachers and students! And programs were held, such an adopt-a-school program, to help those students in need of money.

I spoke with the school head, Mrs. Ochoa, who told me the details of sponsoring a student. Apparently, gifted children from the surrounding Alabang makeshift areas were chosen by the school to be as scholars. The problem is, these children do not have the means to go to school, lest even clothe themselves in the proper uniform.
The adopt-a-school program was then pushed, to help get sponsors for these children. The benefits are great, actually. Not only will you help a child learn and possibly graduate from school, you’ll also have the opportunity to sit-in at classes and personally help them out. Going back with the idea of family, you’re basically fostering a stronger family.

I’ve actually decided to help with this program. Though I may not the funds ready, I regularly visit Anima Christi, to talk with the students. More than just adopting a school, I try to give back by helping out where I can. Try to contact your local schools for similar programs – it’s worth it, the satisfying feeling of helping out is one of the best highs ever!
